Page reveals and transitions.

The first second of a page, and the moment between two pages. Each one runs live in its own little browser window, with a note on what it’s good for and when we’d leave it out.

With reduced motion switched on, pages simply appear. A companion to the website effects guide, and part of our website design and build work.

Page reveals

How a page arrives.

The first second of a page. Each window plays when it comes into view; replay it to watch again.

Staggered rise

Good for
Almost any page. The content settles into place piece by piece, quick enough never to be in the way.
Leave it out when
It runs on every page of a site people move through quickly; keep it for landing pages.

Curtain lift

Good for
A first visit or a campaign page: a panel lifts off the page like a curtain going up.
Leave it out when
People will see it on every click. A curtain is an occasion, not a habit.

Logo intro

Good for
A brand-led site's front door: the mark arrives, then steps aside for the page.
Leave it out when
It holds people up for more than a second, or plays again on every visit.

Mask grow

Good for
A page led by one strong picture: the page opens out from a framed window.
Leave it out when
The first thing on the page is text people came to read.

Split panels

Good for
A launch or an announcement: the page is revealed as two panels part.
Leave it out when
It's a site of everyday pages; it reads as a trailer, not a welcome.

Loader

Good for
Only when there really is something heavy to load, like a 3D scene or a large film, and the count reflects it.
Leave it out when
The page is ready anyway. A fake loader is a delay with a number on it.

Page transitions

How one page hands over to the next.

Use the menu inside each window to move between its pages.

Crossfade

Good for
Any site: the calmest hand-over there is, and never confusing.
Leave it out when
You want a sense of direction; a fade doesn't say where you went.

Push

Good for
Pages with an order, like steps or chapters: the new page slides in and the old one moves aside.
Leave it out when
The pages aren't a sequence; sideways movement implies next and previous.

Colour wipe

Good for
A brand with a strong colour: a band of it sweeps across and takes the old page away.
Leave it out when
Navigation is frequent; the wipe hides the page for a moment each time.

Circle from the click

Good for
Tying the change to the thing you clicked: the new page grows out of that point.
Leave it out when
It's used everywhere; it's a flourish, best kept for one kind of link.

Stacked sheet

Good for
Going deeper, like opening a product from the shop: the new page slides up over the old.
Leave it out when
The pages are equals; stacking implies one sits on top of the other.

Blinds

Good for
A bold, graphic brand: columns close over the page and open on the next.
Leave it out when
It's used between every page; it's the loudest option here.

Shared element

Good for
A card becoming the page it links to: the photo travels from the card into the product page's header. Open the veg box, then go back.
Leave it out when
The two pages don't share a picture; without one it's just a fade.

One good hand-over beats five clever ones.
